Journalistic photography

After reading recently about photography techniques, I felt like writing about mine. Journalism is about retelling a story, in the most raw and certain manner. It would be unethical in photojournalism and writing to recount an event in any other manner. Journalistic photography, my style of photography, does just that.

By using natural light, I am able to capture a real moment, with flaws and objects that in and of themselves are beautiful. A particle of dust, the peach fuzz on a baby's face, backlit by the setting sun; this is what I aim to capture.

By not using typical "props" and backdrops, I use a natural setting and natural light to capture details of the world, that through my viewfinder are an image of true beauty. A bokeh (the bubbly, out of focus look usually found in the background of portraits) created by fall leaves and rays of light coming through them, the texture of wood and chipped paint. Its all beauty to me.

When people, be it a family, a couple or a new born baby are placed meaningfully into those settings, another thing happens, it creates an energy of happiness and joy. When those people interact with each other, spontaneously and naturally, the image I capture at that moment is raw, organic, its real. I love this!!

And because its a digital age, and because I can, I take those raw images and make a image that tells a story, I make light more ambient and full, I make colors more intense, I soften a harsh shadow or smooth a blemish, so that you can look at your images and remember the moment it was taken, without noticing a measly little zit, or a trash can in the background.

And this is what I hope my clients understand, and seek!! I love my job!
